Stop One: Driefontein Farm
This is where everything started for our small town, on land purchased by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1852 to begin a new congregation and town. A beautiful stop with the old homestead foundations still visible.
Stop Two: The Karoo Country Inn
One of the oldest buildings and businesses in town. Originally called the Commercial Hotel, it was completed in 1853 and still runs as a hotel today.
Stop Three: Methodist Church and Gereformeerde Kerk
The first four churches to have been built in Middelburg. The town revolved around the churches, and the Gereformeerde Kerk is the oldest in South Africa which is still in use.

Stop Five: The Mayor’s Garden
Once the original outspan for oxen in town, this garden now holds a wall of remembrance from wars past, a steamroller once used to work on Middelburg’s roads, a water pump gifted by Queen Victoria and a memorial to those who fell during the Anglo-Boer War. Stop Six: The Stoel Monument
An interesting part of the Middelburg Anglo-boer War history. This monument marks the spot where Kommandante JC Lotter and Lieutenant Pieter J Wolfaard, two of the most wanted rebels in the Cape Colony, were tied to a chair and shot for treason.
Stop Seven: The Poor School – Now the Middelburg Museum
Make sure you set aside enough time for wandering through the Middelburg Museum (R5 entrance fee). Once a school for the poor and now a museum, holding some beautiful memorabilia of times gone by.
Stop Eight: Karel Theron
One of the most beautiful buildings in Middelburg and definitely worth a drive by. If not one of Sir Herbert Baker’s buildings, most definitely a copy. Built in 1908, this building holds National Monument status.

Stop Ten: The Old Graveyard
Graves of British soldiers and characters from the past have been laid to rest within these walls. For some a wander through may be interesting.
